Susie could tell right away when her father had been drinking – he had extra sparkling eyes, he smiled a lot, he breathed heavy, and he talked non-stop for endless hours. She was supposed to listen to every word, agree real fast and with enthusiasm, and then tell her dad what a great man he was.

Five tips to help feel less depressed.

1. Begin your morning with some luxurious useful stretches and deep breaths.

2. Then remember what you love and what makes you feel grateful. Have a good breakfast. Wake up early enough so you don't feel rushed.

3. If you're feeling bad, remember SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). It's winter- get some sunshine or invest in a special light. Get some excercise.

4. Listen to your complaints- those nasty things you hear inside your head. Who is talking? Are they always saying the same things? Is there a pattern?

5. Start changing the pattern- remember-compassion for the self is the beginning of change.

Scared Stiff

Emily’s boyfriend dropped her; he told her he wouldn’t ask her out again because she was like a parrot, she always agreed with him. “It’s like you’re not there, Em,” he said. About the same time her favorite teacher told her basically the same thing- she was smart, but didn’t seem to have a mind of her own; the teacher suggested Emily might need help, so Emily decided to see a psychotherapist–me.

What do mindfulness practices, like yoga, and psychotherapy have in common?

1. Yoga is a mindfulness practice-- together with therapy it settles the body and the mind.

2. The mindful self acts in the present moment-- therapy and yoga together develop the mindful self.

3. Yoga helps us feel connected. Therapy makes connections possible.

4. Psychotherapy and yoga  help us see clearly.

5. Both together can help you find your place in the world of work, family and love.

How do you choose a therapist?

1. Ask questions. What are the therapist's qualifications?

2. Tell about yourself. Does therapist ask good questions?

3. Can you reach the therapist between sessions?

4. Trust your gut feelings. Do you feel comfortable?

5. Can you be playful?
